Put simply, a virus is a computer program that attaches itself to a legitimate program or file, spreading from one computer to another.
It is important to note that a virus cannot infect your computer without some kind of human interaction... But don't think I'm blaming you! Viruses are designed to blend in, and seem legitimate, so running one can seem innocuous, and you may never know if a file contains a virus or not.

You can think of a computer virus much like a human virus - it is unwanted, and can do severe damage!

A worm is similar to a virus, some experts even consider to be a class of virus. Worms spread from computer to computer without human interaction, unlike a virus. A worms is dangerous in its capability to replicate itself on your system, so instead of sending out one copy of itself at a time, it can flood your computer network with thousands of copies, which can be devastating.

What about a Trojan? Named after the Trojan Horse of Greek mythology, a Trojan will look like useful software, until it is run. Those on the receiving end of a trojan will often be tricked in to running it, believing it to be legitimate software. Trojans are known to install backdoors in to your system, so that hackers can later gain access - this is where the name comes from!

Okay fine, we've sorted that out - but what if I get a virus? What can I do to help prevent against them?

Always keep your computer up-to-date, including your anti-virus software (you do have anti-virus software, don't you?) and don't run programs if you don't know where they came from! The best tip when it comes to computer security is to be extremely cautious.

At Datamerge, we provide an Anti-Virus service, where we install an Anti-Virus software package on your system (which includes protection against malware and worms) and we can remotely manage it, ensuring it is always up-to-date. Want to know more? Contact us today!
